Márta Takács-Miklósi PhD is an assistant professor at the Institute of Educational Studies and Cultural Management at the University of Debrecen, her PhD has been on education science. She has been working in research concerning prisons for about 10 years. Her research topic is focusing on education and training of prisoners, the situation of prison teachers and the role of NGOs in prisons. In the past years she has participated in several Hungarian and international initiatives, research programmes, among others concerning prisoners and staff in Czech, Slovak and Polish prisons on educational and cultural opportunities.
She has published more than 30 studies and articles in Hungarian and international (American, Canadian, Slovak, Polish, Romanian, etc.) journals and volumes on the topics of education, training, cultural opportunities, and the opportunities for juvenile prisoners.

The penitentiary system in Hungary

In my presentation I will introduce the Hungarian prison system, plan to talk about the Hungarian Prison Service, the legal background (especially the Act of CCXL 2013), the new agglomeration centers, statistical data (concerning the number of penal institutions, inmates, nationalities, overcrowding, staff, etc.), the jobs in prison (reintegration officer, prison staff) and full employment among inmates. I will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of our system and introduce the new smart prison being built in Csenger (will be inaugurated in December 2024).

What educational and cultural rights of inmates are ensured in general and especially in Hungary?

In my presentation I will summarize what educational and cultural rights of inmates are ensured in general (according to the researchers) and especially in Hungary. I will talk about the main characteristics of the Hungarian penitentiary system concerning the educational opportunities ensured for inmates (elementary school, secondary grammar school, vocational education, trainings) and the situation of prison teachers.
Concerning the cultural rights, I will talk about the prison library, cultural programs, NGOs and
volunteers in prison, opportunities of film club, meditation, photo exhibition, bibliotherapy, prison theatre, religious activities.

International experiences concerning Italian, Polish, Slovakian, Czech, Maltese and Portuguese prison visits

In my presentation I will talk about my international experiences. In the last few years I have visited several countries and prisons (Slovak Republic, Czechia, Poland, Belgium, France, Italy, Malta, Portugal) to get information concerning how the prison reintegration system works in European countries. In my presentation I will introduce my experiences concerning the prison visits, especially in the field of education, vocational training, cultural opportunities, prison libraries, extracurricular programs, music bands, health department, working in prison, riots in prison (Italy), etc.
